Out of the Ashes
Can you believe it's been 13 years since September 11, 2001? I was a freshman in high school. I didn't hear about what happened until a little bit later in the morning when a bunch of upper classmen were in the library trying to watch the news on TV. Soon after, I actually left school early for a doctor's appointment, and I begged my mom to let me stay home so I could watching the coverage of the attack. I still remember that day like it was yesterday.
Isn't it crazy how when big things like this happen we always remember exactly where we were and what we were doing?
Soon after that attacks, my 3-D Art Class created a series of sculptures, titled 'Out of Ashes, Love Awakened,' based on iconic photos of the aftermath of the attacks: children running to parents, firemen raising the American flag, regular people carrying the injured. For a long time, it was displayed in the halls of my high school, Fredericksburg Christian High School. A few weeks after it was completed, my art teacher, Mrs. Yost contacted the Bush Administration and eventually the exhibit was moved to the White House as it was chosen to become a part of President Bush’s Presidential Library and Museum. A display of photos of the exhibit was also placed in the Pentagon.
Yesterday, on the 13 year anniversary, I found out that our sculptures were in fact moved to President Bush’s Presidential Library and Museum and will one day be on display. While we are not sure when they will be on display, my 3-D art class was invited to the Library and Museum for a special tour and viewing of our sculptures.
Who would have thought that after all these years later we would be invited to attend such an amazing event to commemorate a huge part of our history? This is such a huge honor. The Library and Museum are in Dallas, Texas and I am hoping to make it there for the event.
While I don't have any photos of the sculptures themselves (or if I do, they are not digital and I wouldn't even know where to begin to find them), I borrowed a few photos from the Fredericksburg Christian School Facebook Page of my teacher, Mrs. Yost, visiting the display at the Pentagon in 2003.
